 STROKE

RECOGNITION of symptoms of a stroke and the treatment and protection of the patient.

Signs of a Stroke Include

Difficulty with speech or inappropriate response to questions, this is called APHASIA.

Numbness or tingling of one side of the body and face, this is called PARESTHESIA

Loss of balance, with onset of severe headache, accompanied with vomiting.

TREATMENT

CALL 911

Lay the patient on the effected side to keep their AIRWAY open and allow for any fluid in the mouth to drain.

Reassure patient that help is coming.

Try to get patient to respond to your voice with movement or sound. If the patient is responding, this will let the caregiver know they are BREATHING.

STABILIZATION

Maintain body temperature with a blanket and Maintain the patients AIRWAY, BREATHING and CIRCULATION.

If the patient stops BREATHING, Give patient 2 breathes watching for chest rise.

If patient DOES NOT RESIST, and no movement is present, begin CPR .

GIVE 2 BREATHS, PLACE HANDS IN CENTER OF CHEST AND COMPRESS 2 INCHES 30 TIMES. THIS IS CALLED A CYCLE. DO THIS 5 TIMES OR AS LONG AS YOU CAN WITHOUT STOPPING.
